ABSTRACT
The 1870s saw the beginnings of a new period of British expansion on the Malay Peninsula. In the same decade, the Dutch increased their influence in Borneo and the Spanish moved against Sulu. The British Government did not wish to expand its own territory in Borneo beyond Labuan, but events forced its hand.
