ABSTRACT
The present chapter will attempt to establish an approximate date of composition of The Duties. To that effect we will rely primarily on internal evidence. This will result in a hypothesis as regards its date and historical background. In adducing evidence from contemporary sources the hypothesis will be tested as an explanatory model. It will be applied in an attempt to reach plausible explanations for a number of characteristics and particularities of the text.
