Introduction: THE HANI PEOPLE AND LANGUAGE

Considering the closeness of the Hani and Akha languages, it is likely that they were one language some 1,000 to 1,200 years ago. The term 1 Akha' was evidently only used by those 1 Zani 1 who moved south across the Mekong (Lancang) River.
