ABSTRACT

Schaffer continued as Factory Manager until 1983, a total direct involvement with Kenana of eight years. During his three years in the post, he had managed to resolve most of the plant’s operational problems and the year he left, the factory achieved sugar production of 230,000 tonnes. The question was, who could replace him? A few Arkel employees were proposed, only to be rejected as being medically unfit, too young or without adequate English by Kenana’s Managing Director, Osman El Nazir (who had taken up the position in November 1981 when his predecessor, Mohamed El Wagie, was appointed as Sudan’s Minister of Industry). Finally, Arkel proposed an acceptable candidate, a Cuban called Alvaro Garcia.
