ABSTRACT

Lonrho’s team undertook a survey of site conditions and the socioeconomic implications of the project, but needed technical expertise to complete the feasibility study. René Leclezio, Lonrho’s ‘sugar man’, turned to Harold Willet of Cameco (Cane Machinery and Engineering Inc., USA), the world’s leading cane plantation and harvesting machinery manufacturer, for advice about finding an American company to help. It seems likely that Leclezio had an eye on future funding from the US Exim Bank, and thought it more likely to materialise with an American company involved in the project.
