ABSTRACT

The literary chancellor is expected to attend and preside once at the competitory examinations held monthly in each of the colleges. Literary competition is deemed incompatible with sincere’ mourning for a parent. The Literary Chancellor is the presiding mandarin at the last examination which decides who are the fortunate candidates that attain the lowest literary degree. The object of the examination at the time of his first visit is principally to exercise them, and to prepare them for the next competitive examination for the second degree at the capital of the province. The preliminaries to enter the examination before the literary chancellor are essentially the same as those before the district magistrate. The literary chancellor sends notice to the different, prefects in his province of the time when he will examine the literary undergraduates of the prefecture. The design of establishing the colleges was to encourage and stimulate the students to write essays and poems of a high order.
