ABSTRACT

A circumstance which occurred in connexion with the proffering of presents according to Chinese custom at that time created a great deal of talk and diversion, and will be long remembered by friends of the parties most intimately concerned. While the Chinese are born free, they are not all born with equal rights, privileges, and duties. There are a few privileged families among the Chinese by hereditary right; but in every family which has sons born to it, one has special rights and privileges established at least by general consent and common custom. In case of the eldest son dying before marriage, or after marriage without male children, who shall assume his rights and privileges, and act as his representative. The children of the adopted heir sustain the same relation to the brothers, uncles, and nephews of their adopted father as though they were the lineal descendants of the childless man.
