ABSTRACT
It is only within the last hundred or so years that free full-time education has been available for all children. Under the 1944 Education Act in England, it became the duty of the parent of every child of compulsory school age to cause him to receive full-time education suitable to his age, ability and aptitude, either by regular attendance at school or otherwise. In England, at present, compulsory school age is five to sixteen years.
