ABSTRACT
This syndrome was described by Gull in this country in 1868 and, independently, in France by Lasègue in 1874. Anorexia nervosa is characterised by:
A disturbance of food intake, usually a failure to eat sufficient food, hence the term anorexia, but episodes of over-eating (bulimia) may also occur.
Marked weight loss.
Disturbance of body image.
When appropriate, absence of normal menstrual function (i.e., in females of reproductive years).
The absence of a specific disease entity underlying the disorder.
