ABSTRACT
Adolesence is derived from the Latin adolescere meaning to grow. It is defined in the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary as ‘a process or condition of growing up; the period between childhood and maturity extending from fourteen to twenty-five in males and twelve to twenty-one in females’. The term is said to have been used first by Rousseau in 1762.
