ABSTRACT

Mathematics is probably the second most important subject in school, as first priority must be given to English. Before school, and during the years at school, a child learns an appreciable amount about English by listening, talking and reading. The child learns this from his or her teacher and also from parents, friends, books, films and television. Mathematics never has the same everyday opportunities to influence a child and can generally only be learnt from the school curriculum. Therefore the strength of the mathematics in a school directly affects the achievements of the pupils, whose successful learning depends on good teaching. In this first chapter it will be shown that mathematics teaching and learning should be considered as a continuous process.
