ABSTRACT

Educational computing has only recently been introduced into schools, where it is usually the responsibility of the mathematics teachers. These teachers have been studying mathematics since they started school but they have probably had few opportunities to study computing which they often have to teach at various levels. This chapter aims to provide material by which teachers can broaden their experience of computing. The first part describes the present position of computing in schools and explains how it reached that position. The chapter then analyses the different rôles of computing in schools and finally provides information about the various ways in which a teacher can obtain support.
