ABSTRACT

This chapter is in four main sections, which summarise the current state of British research on sex roles and the education system, outline the changes in UK education policy that have had particular impact on gender in education, evaluate the main methods available to gather data, and propose some promising areas for future research. Material from countries other than Britain is not covered systematically, although some key scholars from English-speaking countries are mentioned where appropriate. The school system is the central focus, although some coverage is given to further and higher education.
