ABSTRACT

Using weights derived from the previous chapter, a general index of consumption prices has been constructed. This includes all available information on retail prices, and also the wholesale prices of a number of consumption goods, while an index figure of distributive costs is estimated from certain information about changes in distributors’ margins on food and clothing, the results of a special inquiry. Some hitherto unpublished information about changes in the price of services is also included.

By including the prices of exports and capital goods, and by deducting the prices of imports, this index is converted into a figure for the price level of output as a whole.
