A Nineteenth Century Approach The Low Tariff Bloc of the 1860s

There is an interesting parallel between the movement towards the economic integration of western Europe in the 1950s and somewhat similar developments in international commercial relations which took place nearly a century earlier. Several treaties signed in the 1860s placed the commercial relations of the principal trading countries of western Europe on a new basis and inaugurated a short but significant era of virtual Free Trade.
