ABSTRACT

The reafon oftheLatoz word Hircu*, is derived of Hirtus (fignifying rough) by reafon of the roughnefs of their bodies And it is further to be underftood,that the general kind of Goats (which the Latins diftinguifh by Hircus> Capra, and Hoedm, that is, by their fex, or by their age ; the Hebrews call them Angularly Ez, and plurally faw,Numb. 15 .for a Goat of a year old,you (hall read Izbnhfib mtb. The Cbalde ufeth alio the general word Oza; the Arabian^chaab; the Pttfian, Buz, and whereas Levit. 16. Seir is put for Caper a gelded G o a t , there the Cbalde reudereth it Zephirab ; the Arabian* ^ Atud, and the Perfian Buzgalaie. And in the fame Chapter you {hall read Azazel, which Vaviti Kimbi rendereth for the name o f a mountain neer Sinai where Goats ufe to feed and lodge : and the Stptuagints tranflate it Apopompaion, fignifying emifSon or fending away, and for this caufe I luppofé, that when the Scape-goat was by the Prieft fent out of the Temple, he went to that mountain, and therefore the word Azazel feemeth to be compounded of f x , a Goa t , and Azalluit, that is, he w e n t ; for the Scape Goat went and carryed away the evill.
