ABSTRACT

Ileft Guadeloupe on the 29th August (1700) in the evening and arrived at Martinique the following day just before noon. The Superior-General, and Père Giraudet and Père Paris, my good friends who were living with him at Les Mouillages, told me nothing about the business for which I had been summoned, and while we were dining they chaffed me because of my impatience to know what it was. At last when we had finished dinner, the Superior-General told me that he knew he could always rely on me in any important business concerning the mission, and that he was in need of me now. But before he told me anything he said that he would like me to tell him frankly if I were willing to leave Guadeloupe for a time, and make a voyage which was of importance to the mission. The word “voyage” pleased me, and I thought he wanted me to go to Europe, so I said I was quite ready to start at once. He thanked me, and then went on to say that the voyage was not a long one but only to Grenada, where we owned a large property which had been given to us by M. de Compte de Cerrillac, ci-devant proprietor of that island. He had learnt that several individuals in Grenada were establishing themselves in our valley and were asking to be given a concession of our land. It was my duty to put an end to this business. We decided on the best measures to take, and he gave me ample authority to do all that was necessary to achieve this object.
