He alone sailed with the intention of crossing that ocean whose limits it was supposed impious to attempt to pass, because they were the boundaries of the habitable world. Other illustrious men have suffered equal physical hardships, shewn equal skill, and possessed equal science; but none had ever this awful feeling to contend with.
