ABSTRACT

There is nothing in the form of the word Turkey to distinguish it from such names as England, France, Germany, or Russia, but it may be safely said that many of the errors which have been committed by politicians and others in dealing with the nearer East are due to the fact that Turkey has been treated as if it were like other countries, whereas the first requisite for an elementary knowledge of the Eastern question is to understand that Turkey is quite unlike any other country in Europe.
