ABSTRACT

It would be a mistake to think that the bilan in the battle for Malaya tells entirely against the British. Superficially, this may seem to be the right verdict: Britain lost her prestige in the East when she lost Singapore, and the loss of her Empire followed. Of course there were other contributory causes, including the lack of the will to retain an Empire in the first place; but these causes were interlinked. Yet, in spite of her victory, Japan lost something too.
