Summary of the Empirical Findings

For Tanzania 1987/88 was a good farming year. As both agricultural output and gross domestic product rose sharply for the second consecutive year, positive growth of national income per capita was achieved. The favourable trend in domestic food production together with the liberalization of the grain trade made for an improvement in food supplies to the towns at falling real prices. Food security at national level has thus improved – for the time being at least. ²⁸⁰
