ABSTRACT

IT was after midnight when Sarah and Yosef reached Athlit. They found Reuven Schwartz, Manasseh Bronstein and Mendel Schneersohn waiting on the shore, as they had waited every moonless night during the two months Sarah and Yosef had been away. Sarah embraced her cousin and sought to draw from his strained face some indication of the situation that awaited them. Reuven could only murmur “Bad, very bad,” before he turned and plunged into the water to help the others.
