ABSTRACT

In the Intelligence Staff the Elint and Comint sections had been joined together in an electronic intelligence division two years earlier. With the addition of the Elint personnel now transferred from the air force, this division now counted over 800 employees. By 1970 Elint, while still employing less than half the number of people engaged in Comint, had grown into a very important part of the Norwegian intelligence effort. In its memorandum to the Cabinet Committees 20 June meeting, the Ministry of Defence gave the purpose of METRO as electronic mapping of the Russian control, warning and communications system, determination of the Soviet order of battle, studies of tactics and operational procedures for the Russian air forces. But in view of the proposals for a joint air force/NIS Elint station at nearby BARHAUG, it was decided to postpone consideration of improvements to the staff accommodation at Korpfjell.
