ABSTRACT

With the new generation of detection and analysis systems operating from 1969 in the CANASTA/PATIENCE project, there was an increased possibility of detecting unknown submarines operating near the north Norwegian coast. Firstly, it showed that Norwegian sonar capacity and combination of various methods of collection could give reliable results, and, secondly, Western operations were going on not far from the coast of Norway without the knowledge of the Norwegians. The Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (NDRE) from the end of the 1960s was engaged in an intensive research and development programme, precisely with the aim of improving possibilities for detection of submarines in coastal waters. In the NDREs annual report for 1962 the outcome of the project so far was characterised as follows: Bridge has during testing attained maximum ranges of 225 nm in experiments with the two Norwegian submarines Kaura and Kyra acting as target vessels.
