ABSTRACT
Most of the [British] attacks broke down under our barrage fire, and if they did not a comparatively small number of rifles, and certainly machine guns when a few remained undamaged, sufficed to repel them. Only in those instances where the garrison of our trenches was originally weak, and had been put out of action by the enemy's artillery fire, did the British succeed in penetrating into our trenches.
