ABSTRACT
The general organisation of the defence was adapted from the Germans, as laid down in the manual Allgemeines über Stellenbau [General Principles of the Construction of Field Positions] issued … on 15th Aug[ust] 1917. This book, copies of which were captured soon after issue, summed up the enemy's experiences after nearly three years’ defensive warfare on the Western Front.
