ABSTRACT
A few weeks before he was due to travel out to New Zealand, Gorst contracted scarlet fever. He was very ill and nearly died. But he pulled through and managed somehow to reach Liverpool where, as we have seen, he boarded the Red Jacket, a clipper bound for Auckland via Melbourne.
