ABSTRACT
John Gorst set foot in New Zealand at a particularly unsettled time in North Island when relations between the Maoris and the colonists were deteriorating. At the heart of the discord was the land problem. The settlers were greedy to buy it and the Maoris were often reluctant to sell it.
