ABSTRACT

When the Gorsts arrived home in England just before Christmas in 1863, John decided he would resume his legal studies and become a barrister. He would be following in the footsteps of his late uncle and of his younger brother who was about to be called to the Bar; also two of Mary’s uncles were barristers. Quite soon he took a suburban villa in Tooting, which was between six and seven miles from the Inner Temple.
