ABSTRACT

The Mediterranean Fleet was now to be involved in the most difficult operation to take place and one which passed in its true form into Israeli history and with embellishment into Zionist folklore. This concerned the illegal immigrant vessel President Warfield, also known to posterity as Exodus 1947, which attempted to land 4554 immigrants, the largest number yet encountered. Her arrest entailed prolonged fighting but it was the subsequent fate of her passengers, which came to attract increasing worldwide interest.
