ABSTRACT

Husayn had tried to assume the kingship of all the Arabs, and had come up against the strong objections of the Allies. They had compelled him to accept the lesser title of king of the Hijaz. This was done in order to limit Husayn's pretentions and confine them to a limited territory. The Sharif was also prompt in asserting territorial claims which he claimed had been agreed in the correspondence with McMahon. The Sharif recurred in a veiled manner to this point in his memorandum of 10 April 1917 in which he asked for increased subsidies. Abdullah, Wilson reported, was 'obviously under the impression that Baghdad is to be incorporated in the Arab Kingdom'. Grey declared that since His Majesty's Government recognise the advantage to the general cause of the Allies entailed in producing a more favourable internal political situation in Turkey.
