ABSTRACT

Rather than continuing to pursue entry to the European Union (EU), Poland has both the potential and the need to become what it terms a ‘bridge’ between what Waever has identified as the Brussels and Moscow cores of Europe. Some geopolitical concepts concerning states, and the role that the Congress Kingdom of Poland played in the economic development of Europe during the nineteenth century are reviewed, and the alternative approaches which the country might adopt in response to its post-socialist 167geopolitical situation are assessed, Attention is also drawn to the increasing problems posed by the continuing failure of the EU to admit Poland to membership.
