ABSTRACT
Despite the avalanche of repressive laws and the banning of many of the leaders, black protest in South Africa was by no means stilled. In December 1955, the 43rd annual conference of the ANC was held in Bloemfontein and was attended by 233 delegates. The Women’s League of the Congress passed a resolution that African women would not, under any conditions, carry passes.
