ABSTRACT

Finding fault with any topic is of course far easier than proposing solutions. The fundamental problem with the arguments against non-lethal weapons is that their proponents offer no viable alternative. Assuming that no utopian intervention will take place in the foreseeable future, humans will continue to engage in conflict, just as they have in the past and are today. Traditional weapons offer two difficult choices - do nothing or kill. Nonlethal weapons (NLWs) offer alternatives. In my view, those who oppose the use of non-lethal weapons by fiat must support either capitulation or killing. If they believe that humans will miraculously stop - or even lessen - their near ubiquitous aggression if non-lethal weapons simply did not exist, then we live on different planets and discussion is pointless.
