ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the need for and execution of the stewardship of property. It describes the roles and activities of estate and property management and facilities management. The chapter shows how different businesses require different kinds of management and the management for different states of a building’s life. Caring for property or the stewardship of property is multi-functional and presents two professional fields — property management and facilities management. In considering property management and facilities management below it would be helpful to appreciate that the separately presented management may in fact be combined in the management of a particular estate. The fabric of buildings and structures, whether owner-occupied or tenanted, requires repair and maintenance. Outsourcing of property or facilities management has grown, with contractors offering a full range of services or specialist contractors offering one or, at least, a limited number of services.
