ABSTRACT

The recognized training schemes and qualifications for the industry are almost exclusively provided by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) and its academic and professional branch, the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene (FOH). The FOH has a number of levels of academic and professional qualifications and it must be remembered that its principal interest is the field of occupational hygiene, which covers a multitude of workplace hazards such as toxic chemicals and physical matters such as noise and vibration, ergonomics and non-ionizing radiation. The National Individual Asbestos Certification Scheme has as its base qualification a Royal Society for the Promotion of Health (RSPH) Level 3 Certificate in Asbestos Inspection Procedures which has been accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). Refresher training attempts to deal with two problems. First, people can get blasé about the risks and forget their training or develop bad habits. Second, however, standards and procedures develop, new information becomes available and regulations change.
