ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses a "reluctant-to-leave-client-work-to-do-management" surveyor or agent might read that will provide the foundations of management knowledge to support him in a management role–whether it is for a small team or a medium-sized firm. It avoids most of the business and management jargon and to make it as painless and as quick a read as possible. The book considers the slightly irreverent and "let's not take ourselves too seriously" tone that is so common among the largely modest property professions. It shows that the lawyers and accountants seem to have grasped the management concept and moved from the partnership ethos to corporate culture much faster than surveyors. The book suggests that planning is one of those topics that the property professions find amongst the hardest.
