ABSTRACT
The transcription used in the vocabulary and notes, which is intended to serve as a guide to pronunciation, is that used in Professor A. K. S. Lambton's Persian Grammar (Cambridge, 1953). I must, however, plead to some inconsistency in that in the Introduction and Notes I have used the more traditional forms ch, hh, sh, gh, and eh (where this represents the 'silent' h preceded by the vowel e) for c, x, ∫, γ, and e in the transcription of proper names and the titles of books and periodicals. In similar cases I have represented the letter ain in the transcription even when it occurs in an initial position, and I have also used ā and a in preference to α and a throughout.
