ABSTRACT

Good planning is essential, from the overall degree programme, through specific courses, to individual lectures and other teaching activities. Also, courses should continually develop and evolve in response to evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of content and delivery. Good teachers have always planned and developed their courses without the need for administrative jargon. Their expertise, intuition and discussion with colleagues usually sufficed and then they quickly got to work on preparation of the course. However, times have changed. Diminishing resources, increased student numbers and increased emphasis on the quality of teaching, mean that careful documented planning is now needed to operate with accountability within the increasing constraints on our flexibility and our budget.
