ABSTRACT

Activities are a characteristic of self-instructional materials. An inspection of any teaching material, from anywhere in the world, will reveal their presence; it will also identify them by a number of terms. They are called exercises, Self-Assessment Questions (SAQs) and also In-Text Questions (ITQs). By the way, there is even a debate as to the difference between an SAQ and an ITQ. In the USA you are likely to find them called Adjunct Aids or even Mathemagenic Devices! This latter term was coined by Ernst Rothkoft, an American researcher (Rothkopf, 1970, page 325); it

...is derived from the Greek root mathemain — that which is learned — and gignesthai — to be born. Mathemagenic behaviors are behaviors that give birth to learning.

In this chapter I have used the general term activity. The following questions should help you to consider why and how to incorporate them in your teaching.
