ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how one is going to collect his information and it gives a flavor of some of the possibilities. If one is thinking about using this method, it is important that questionnaires are clear and unambiguous. The chapter looks at a number of sample designs and founds that certain sample designs suit particular data collection methods. For example, quota sampling would be difficult by post, since people do not know which sub-groups the subjects fall into and cannot monitor the quotas. Simple random sampling could not be applied to high street or mall interviews very easily, since people would not have a sampling frame to select from. Quota sampling or systematic samplings are often used in this sort of situation, where the subjects are on the move. Postal surveys can cut down on costs, but the level of non-response will be greater than, for example, with one-to-one interviews.
