ABSTRACT

This chapter examines student assessment and evaluation. The links to developing a more effective evaluation of training and development are self evident. It also focuses on learning styles the value of using knowledge of these when agreeing how learning is to take place has been referred it. Hence, to promote a particular style of learning it is necessary to consider the organisational climate of the institution or department as well as use of the various approaches to learning. Effective assessment 'links closely with the learning objectives of the course, it assesses the central aspects of what is taught and learnt; it emphasises the development of deep, active, reflective learning; it focuses upon skills and their transfer; is efficient and comprises a reasonable workload'. Formative assessment is designed to diagnose student problems for the guidance of their subsequent study and assist in the learning process.
