ABSTRACT

A learning city activates the creative potential of its citizens through a strategy for encouraging the use of personal learning plans, mentors and guides in citizens of all ages. Sometimes the development of a citizen’s human potential and creativity relies on a more formal array of tools and techniques to aid lifelong learning. Mentors and guides are also useful for stimulating learning development. A training course was developed using a variety of methods — e-mail, tutor visits, teamwork exercises, video-conferences and distance learning assignments. A Mentorship training programme is advisable. Training should include: familiarization with current educational practice; an understanding of the ethos of the school or college; and issues of confidentiality for both student and mentor. A learning city may wish to develop a personal learning plan and mentoring programme for its own citizens so that it fits the culture of the city.
