ABSTRACT

A true learning city would be able to anticipate change and empower its citizens to be sufficiently adaptable, flexible and versatile to quickly recover confidence and employment. From rural reskilling to urban regeneration, ‘Glasgow Works’ is an innovative example of how unemployment benefit can be used to create jobs for long-term unemployed people in activities which the city and its people need. ‘Glasgow Works’ is an initiative forming part of the Glasgow regeneration strategy involving all the key public agencies in the city of Glasgow. ‘Glasgow Works’ focuses on projects which not only provide valuable work experience to unemployed people participating in the scheme but also contributes to the quality of life and to the economy of Glasgow. Guinness provides workshops and courses for all its employees on learning how to learn, knowing why, growing confidence, dealing effectively with people, team and organizational learning and a wide range of other subjects.
