ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss the wider agendas affecting the many changes that are happening in higher education on a global scale. All countries are now faced with a reassessment of how higher education should be delivered to meet the needs of a changing economic order that will demand:

more skilled workers (so called knowledge workers);

more flexibility and therefore lifelong learning skills;

more ‘self starters’ in a more autonomous and team-spirited working environment (independent learning and key skills).
