ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will discuss the role that open learning materials play in the independent learning arena, and how these can be developed via resource-based learning. Open learning here is taken to mean an instructional method that encompasses a variety of resources designed to be used by students independently of the tutor. We refer to resource-based learning as the crafting of a wide variety of resources into a coherent open learning environment. It can include, for example, work-alone paper-based tutorials with exercises, and group work involving problem solving and case-based learning. Computer technology is now playing a vital role in this area of education. Computers can be used to prepare, compile and deliver educational material – in fact offer integrated access to multimedia open learning environments.
