ABSTRACT

Practical and laboratory classes are usually regarded as essential components of science and technology-based courses. They are also found in some arts-related disciplines (eg geography, languages, psychology). In this chapter, we will try to identify those objectives that are best achieved in practical classes and discuss the ways in which you can assist your students to achieve them. This is important, as studies have shown that student reactions to practical work are variable. There are several possible reasons for this. One significant reason may be that the running of practical classes is often left to junior staff who may not have the experience or authority to recognize and rectify deficiencies. This is often not their fault, as staff training in laboratory class supervision is rarely provided. Designing, implementing and running a practical course is a complex, and expensive, component of the curriculum requiring the skill and support of senior staff.
