ABSTRACT
In recent years the magnetic compass has tended to play a lesser role in the immediate navigation of the vessel, but because of its independence of power supplies etc. it has remained an essential element in the ship’s overall navigational equipment. It is still a legal requirement that it be carried (see Section 10.3) and, in spite of the trend towards total reliance on the gyro compass, it is important that the magnetic compass error is checked and logged
