ABSTRACT

The intrinsic property of a marine radar system is the ability to detect certain objects (referred to as targets) which are present in the vicinity of a radar equipped vessel and hence to determine the range and bearing of such targets. Any other data obtained from the radar system is deduced from these two basic quantities. It is assumed that the reader has studied the detailed principles which underlie the operation of the system. This introduction is intended merely to summarize the application of such principles as an initial step in considering the use of radar data in navigation control.
