ABSTRACT

The new paradigm means that teams responsible for construction undertake their work through networks. Capra (1996) identifies the key characteristics of networks as patterns, structures and processes. Patterns are model configurations of relationships that define organizations and shape the way they can work. Patterns are given practical expression in an organization's structures and processes. Any given pattern may be expressed in structures and processes that differ considerably in the practical detail of real-world organizations. This chapter describes the patterns teams should keep in mind in making decisions about their organizations. The issues that influence decisions about structures and processes are described in Chapters 5 and 6.
